Scrap paper

When I'm painting, I like to keep a piece of scrap
watercolor paper next to the paper so I can test colors
before painting with them. I should have framed the
scrap, since the painting failed. Isn't it amazing how free
and easy we can be when not shackled by a preconceived
idea. I know that's how it works for me. I need to remember
that. Do others feel that way?

Absolutely Doug!
I can't tell you how many doodles and rough sketches I like so much better than the finished piece.
If we could only stay out of our heads when we paint.

I think you should frame this anyway. It's really nice.

For me, it is as if I have a switch in my head. One minute I analyse, count and made decisions (and this mode works when I do painting/drawing study), another minute, switch! I follow my feeling and result is good. I think, the point here is also to enjoy the process, not caring about the result.

Hi Deb,

Gosh, isn't that the truth about staying out of our heads. I'm wondering what would happen if I actually tried to do something like this. ooooops I'm inside my head again. Anyway, thanks. I always like hearing from Deb.

p.s. You'll laugh at this one. This morning I went out to blow the driveway off. Damn snowblower wouldn't start. First thing I thought of was you as I reached for the snow shovel. OK you can stop laughing now.

Irina, thanks for coming by. You are so right about enjoying the process. Nothing about watercolor has been enjoying for the last month or so. Think I'll do some charcoal or pastel drawings just from memory for a while. You keep painting and improving, I love to watch you progress.

I think this is absolutely wonderful!!! The color and expression in it are fabulous...what wondrous things are in your subconscious DD!!! (Definitely needs to be framed and hung!!!)

Yes...we're back from our adventure!!! I'll be posting today!!!

Doug, So glad I found my way to your blog.
This is lovely.
Many of my watercolors have been turning to mud lately. I seem to fall into the same futile traps even when I KNOW the outcome might not be so pleasing. Sometimes it's as if all the years of painting, just fly out the window. I call these times 'what was I thinking' times.

Kathy,

Nice to have you back in blogville. You've been missed. No one has been serving cocktails. Thanks for the wonderful comments. I know there are ideas in there it's just seems so hard to track them down.
They don't pop out like they used too. Maybe far to many years of flipping the switch and gathering 4 or 5 a day for 35 years.

Welcome Maggie, nice to meet you. I think you have a terrific blog and I look forward to seeing what your up too.

What was I thinking, boy isn't that the truth. All the years flying out the window just baffles me. Knowledge of color, how to paint, composition. Let's make a deal, If I find and answer to keeping the window shut I'll share it with you. If you find it maybe you'll share with me. I feel honored when someone of your talent decides to visit my blog. I know I'm certainly glad I found yours. Here's to better days.

Hi PB,
Take solace in the fact we screw up the most when we are the brink of a break through. It's a painful period and we always need to go through it (and often since it's somewhat cyclical.) I always think I paint alot of dogs then finally I stop thinking and alas I am there. (as you will be)
So keep frustrating yourself cuz soon you'll crossover.
hugs, b

Thanks B, I've been sketching and fiddling with charcoal today. First couple were pretty good cause I didn't think about it too much. The third one I started to think and whoops. Kindling for the burn pile.
Sorry for being so negative recently, this is really getting me down. I'll keep going because B says I should. Thanks B,
Your painting buddy

PB,
It's funny how we artists become so wrapped up in our highs and lows..they can absolutely take over our mental well being. That being said....it is perfectly NORMAL. It's also how we get out of it. Paint on..don't wait for inspiration..it's inside. Maybe read some George Inness. I suggest "George Inness, Writing and Reflections on Art and Philosophy." You can get it on Amazon. Wrap yourself up in that! Yum!

Ah, you know me way to well B.
I'll check out George Inness Reflections on Art and Philosophy. Is it a murder mystery, I really get into those. Alright, stop screaming at me it's just a joke, settle down and take a deep breath. Hey B, (check your email tomorrow).

Your a real sweetheart and I truly appreciate all of your support.

Your painting buddy.
