Not Another Day

Fear not, a pastelist I'll never be. Just couldn't
stand another day of watercolor so I pulled out some
old cheap pastels. Took the shot before I knocked the
dust off. Watercolor tomorrow.

Oh... I like this.
Good choice in picking the medium of the day!

I keep telling myself I am goingto try some pastels - but I find I don't like the feel of them on my hands - I know - weird. Maybe if I wear gloves.

Thanks Deb, it tells me I need to head back to watercolors. My fingers felt sore and dry and like I had run them through a belt sander. I'm sure all the pastel artists out there will be going, O boo hoo, the poor little boy hurt is little fingers. Yah, yah, I'll stick to watercolor. Take care Deb, relax.

You may want to stick to watercolor...but I have to say I really like this one! It's bold...the colors are fabulous...and I love the composition...your style works well in pastels...I think the boldness of the strokes are more distinctive than in the watercolors...watercolors tend to be more fluid, a bit softer...

Thanks Kathryn, I didn't know how much I missed your comments and observations while you were gone. I appreciate everything you say. Hopefully this pastel will free me a bit to get back to flowing watercolors.

Oh, this is awesome, Doug! Hope it doesn't look too different with the dust knocked off. More of these. Get used to the gesture then transfer same to your watercolors.

PS Go buy some Udderly SMOOth. Wash your hands, dry well, then apply the Udderly SMOOth. It'll work wonders!

Suzanne, thanks for your wonderful support.
You're so right about getting used to the gesture. We'll see how it transfers to watercolor.

Is Udderly SMOOth the same thing as Bag Balm? My dad used it way back when we milked cows by hand.
Thanks for the tip.

Hey PB, So you finally did it..you picked up a pastel and it looks like you enjoyed yourself. Did you underpaint in watercolor or use only pastel?
Seems to me like you are moving somewhere new in your head and that is wonderful. Keep playing and working. I think a new you are on the road to a new discovery.
Oh, and if you want to try pastels I will recommend some with which to start.
cheers PB!

Hey B,
No, there is no underpainting, just plain ole basic pastel (maybe 12 basic colors) on newsprint.
I didn't even think to do an underpainting.
It does seem like I'm moving in a different direction or at least exploration. I wish I had more time to devote to it. Yesterday we had the little boys for half the day so we took them sledding at a hill near our home.
Boy did they have a good time. Fun to watch.
Today it was put up the Christmas tree and decorate.
I'm sitting here now wondering if I should go to the studio or just take a nap.

Pass me some energy B,
Your painting buddy

PB, Sounds like you are enjoying your life in all its wonderful facets. Love of life also reflects in your painting. I have noticed that you are making more time for your art lately.
Habit makes passion, passion feeds habit.
On another note..try some good Uart paper, watercolor and pastel on top. You might like it. You can be really bold in the watercolor, then the pastel is frosting.

Cheers PB...
Enjoy the sleddable snow and your grandchildren.
