Rain over Kauai

This was done in the studio after our trip to Hawaii in
February. I'm quite happy with the clouds over the
land mass. I'm not thrilled with the overall value in this
piece. To many mid tones, no darks and no serious lights.
Rather bland overall. The size is about 12" by 18" done
on Arches cold press 140#. Another example of not painting
enough. What do you think. Get real now!

Hi Doug and welcome back from vacation! I love the clouds in this one ..nice feel. I also really like your contrast from fuzzy, loose foreground and then sharpness in the mid ground and finally more loose distance and clouds.
Can't wait to see what you do in Maine.

Hey! I've been looking at your other blog. Now I've found this and have enjoyed looking through your posted paintings this summer. I know what you mean about the value in this piece but I don't think it matters - a lot of watercolors are like this and some days are just like this. The sky is truly awesome as is the light and value on the sand in lower center of the picture. Kauai? I'm envious. Thanks for visiting my paintings and for your comments.

Loriann, you're very kind with your comments. I do so appreciate you and how nice it's been since I found your blog. I really enjoy waiting to see what's coming next. I am looking forward to Maine and trying to figure out how complex or how simple a set up I want to take. Been a while since I've done any plein air.
I should probably paint a little before a go... what do you think ... should I paint ... OK I get it, stop twisting my arm, I'll paint, I'll paint. Wish me luck my friend.

Suzanne, so nice to finally meet you, I've been following your blog for sometime and loved this new piece you've just posted. I enjoy anyone that handles watercolor with some flair, just like you.
I'm always interested to see how each person develops a technique and how they use color. I love your use of color. Thanks so much for coming by and taking a look. Hope to hear from you again.
Best wishes,
Doug

I like it just the way it is. The clouds really make it. I've experienced those mid-tone days. I was on Kauai in February too.

Hi Susanne,

Thank you my friend for coming by.
Are you glad that you've settled into one place
for a while. I'll bet the trip was great but it probably feels good to know you don't have to get up in the morning and hit the road again. Nice to have you back.

Interesting that you think of this one as bland...I love the subtlety of the colors...it is very peaceful and definitely draws me into the scene...I can almost feel the sand between my toes as I walk along the edge of the water......
